Take out a loan to live at school or commute and graduate debt free?

Bruce Calise: A 45 minute commute just plain sucks - my family drove that from the time I was in preschool to the time I graduated high school (my mother still does) and I can sympathize - it's no fun. However, having a loan to consider when you graduate isn't fun either. You wouldn't have to start paying the loan right away (provided it's a student loan) but you would at some point - with interest - and you've said you're going into a field where you may or not make good money. So you may or may not be landing yourself in trouble.Personally, I would start researching. Don't worry much about the college experience - I live a couple of blocks off campus and can tell you that there really isn't much to it other than drinking and parties - fun for awhile but it gets old fast (at least for me). Start looking at average housing costs for what would accept a dog and what you would want to live in. I would get several different options on apartments/housing in the case that the a! partment doesn't become available when you need it to be.Then, budget. If you're a junior now you're looking at 2-3 and a half years - provided you move out at semester and depending on how long grad school takes you. Take into account the yearly cost for living in an apartment/house for each of your options. Do you work now? How big of a dent could you make on that cost? What's the average salary of your job - or even the lowest possible and factor in that number to be safe. How long do you THINK it would take you to pay off the loan, without considering possible interest? In the end, it's completely up to you and what makes YOU comfortable. If the numbers scare you, obviously it's not the best idea. If you think you'll be going home quite a bit (I still go home, which is about 20 minutes away from where I attend college, on weekends) it's not going to save you much. But if it appears manageable - and you really think you'll be cutting your gas bill - go for it....Show more!

  1. You can likewise utilize understudy loans for everyday costs. Both federal and private credits are disbursed straightforwardly to your school, which takes out educational costs, expenses, and food and lodging on the off chance that you live on campus.
