In 1947 the freeze was lifted and hundreds of stations applied for broadcast licenses and went on the air in a channel allocation plan for the entire nation. In the UK common by the late 1950s (in b/w - colour early 1970s). Common a few years earlier in the USA. Started in South Africa about 1976, first service to start in colour.
