When did televisions become household objects?

Antonette Shappy: This is for the U.S.TV's were first sold in the 1920's GE sold its Octogon model in 1928. http://tvhistory.tv/pre-1935.htm For pictures of the early TV sets seehttp://tvhistory.tv/index.html Choose the year(s) to see a sample of what was available for sale.TV became popular after WWII. In 1945 thousands of applications for TV stations came into the FCC, which could not handle them. They froze new stations for a couple of years to solve the problem. In 1947 the freeze was lifted and hundreds of stations applied for broadcast licenses and went on the air in a channel allocation plan for the entire nation. That over the air broadcast channel allocation plan is still in effect today. Each city got so many TV broadcast licenses.http://jeff560.tripod.com/chronotv.html with the increase in TV stations better technology and RCA owning both TV broadcast TV stations and making the TV sets appliance store saw a huge increase in the number of sets sold.Cable TV ! started in 1948. Cable television originated in the United States almost simultaneously in Arkansas, Oregon and Pennsylvania in 1948 to enhance poor reception of over-the-air television signals in mountainous or geographically remote areas. “Community antennas” were erected on mountain tops or other high points, and homes were connected to the antenna towers to receive the broadcast signals. By 1952, 70 “cable” systems served 14,000 subscribers nationwide.http://www.ncta.com/About/About/HistoryofCableTele......Show more

Robin Marchione: In which country? TVs still not plentiful in some parts of the world. First broadcast service around London, UK, in 1936 but few viewers , and it shut down in WW2. In the UK common by the late 1950s (in b/w - colour early 1970s). Common a few years earlier in the USA. Started in South Africa about 1976, first service to start in colour.
