Granville Stray: I as home educated until I was thirteen. I never did a days academic work, preferring to play with friends, socialise with other home educators and read fiction. I have just finished year 11 of school (UK) with the top possible grades. The advice I would give on achieving highly through home education is do whatever interests you. Take the opportunity to learn things because they are really interesting for their own right, not because a local government authority or educational department thinks you should know them. The people I know who have got the most out of home education are those who follow whatever subjects and areas within those subjects they enjoy. This style of child led learning has resulted in friends of mine doing very well, including one boy a few years my senior studying law at Cambridge university.Don't let people like your uncle tell you what to do unless they actually know about home schooling (and even then take what they say with a p! inch of salt), because everyone's experience of home education is different, and the things that work for some people will make life a living hell for others. Books are your friend, as is the internet. Textbooks, modern fiction, ancient classics, poetry and plays all help to turn a home educated student into a well read student, though if this is not to your liking, find something else. Make models or design kitchens, but whatever you do, make sure it's fun.Best of luck,Jasper Gold (look me up on facebook if you have any questions about home education)....Show more

Toya Braskett: Th! is was your mother's choice, so she should tell her brother (or brother in law) that it is none of his business. You don't have to prove him wrong. Get better first, then work up to your potential for yourself. Many, many home schooled students have gone on to college, and even if they don't attend college, have successful and happy lives. In addition to whatever your mother is teaching you, read a lot of books. Literature, non-fiction. Watch the news to stay up on current events....Show more
Andrew Sinatra: There is no source for something that will make you "smart", since intelligence in a quality concerning capacity to learn. There are, however, many sources available for home schooling materials. I suggest that you begin with getting in touch with the homeschooling organization in your area, where you will find very good suggestions and help. You're just going to have to ignor your uncle. As an alternative to traditional homeschooling, are you aware that! if your health prevents school attendance that the local school districts will provide teachers who will come to your home for a certain amount of time every week and help you stay with the school curriculum so you don't fall behind? The student must provide documentation of the medical condition and medical statements concerning inability to attend school. That service is provided at no charge....Show more
It's typical to feel pushed, uncertain, and overwhelmed about the days to come. While homeschooling can be somewhat unusual on occasion, you can do your absolute best by developing a straightforward everyday practice and not putting a lot of tension on yourself or your children.
