Dick Ovdenk: As I said, Art, this was not a slam against home schoolers, many of which do a great job. However, many do so because of religious reasons and a desire to keep their kids away from non-christians and in my personal experience that has been a tragic decision for several families I know whose children could not deal with reality once they were exposed to the world. I don't hate home schoolers, just think there needs to be more supervision, but then I guess that is exactly what lots of people DON'T want for various reasons, good and bad. I certainly understand that there are bad schools, I also know that bad schools with even a small amount of dedicated parents helping, can have amazing results. I chose the latter.There is a whole group of these people here who post conservative misinformation all day, can only imagine it is a homework assignment from their leader, Michael Farris. We live across the street from a good Public School which ranks at 57%.I know many have been taught to hate home schoolers as religious right wing fanatics but the reality is we only care about our children`s education. We are a cross sample of the nation.One of Obama`s first actions was to end funding for the only charter school system in DC. Forcing thousands of children back into the Pubic school system which by the way is the worst in the nation with an over all performance of 27%.
